Pioneer Conestoga
Placed: June 3, 2006
Location: Laurel Hill, Mount Hood, Goverment Camp, OR
Status: Rolling along!
Background
On our way from Portland to Redmond and the central part of OR during our vacation, Funhog showed us some beautiful views of Mount Hood as we crossed over the skirt of the mountain. While Dave and I stopped to take pictures of the majestic mountain, I happened to notice an information sign that had a picture of a conestoga wagon on the side of the road where we parked.
Funhog told us that this was the most difficult hill for the early pioneers to cross in their covered wagons; so difficult that the wagons would have to be hoisted down the side of the steep terrain to the road below. The Hog went on to explain that there was a great lookout at the top of this trail but had never done it. We mentioned that we had brought an appropriate stamp and the group indulged me while I went up the trail to hide this stamp. We are so happy to not only hide a stamp in a most appropriate place, but also to show travelers and residents alike a lookout that all should enjoy.
Clues
Find the sign on Laurel Hill and the Oregon Trail conestoga marker, located on the right side of the road heading from Portland towards Redmond.
Then climb a winding staircase - up, up, up.
Follow the sign to "Top of the Chute"
You will next encounter this sign.
Read it for a fascinating historical background of this area
Take the faint path at 90 degrees from the historical sign and follow the path to a large stump on the left side of the trail.
You'll find the conestoga parked in the base of this stump.
As always, please rehide carefully. And - since we live clear across the country, please show a little letterboxing love if this box needs a new bag or some maintenance. Thanks very much.
